EMERSON, N.J. — In a packed Emerson Council chambers, Councilman Chris Knoller swore in Capt. Michael McDermott Tuesday night while his family and other well-wishers cheered.

Chief Michael Mazzeo sang McDermott’s praises, saying he must be a great grandfather because he’s a great guy all around.
Both Mazzeo and McDermott rose to their current positions following the recent retirement of former Chief Donald Rossi.
